Kläger Group Energy Park in Hartha: Synergy of Photovoltaics, Industrial Battery Storage, and Bitcoin Mining

The Kläger Group, together with terahash.energy and Timeless Planet, demonstrates how innovative technologies and renewable energies can be synergistically utilized, setting a signal for the future. A 1.6 MWp solar ground-mounted system with battery storage and a Bitcoin mining container enables efficient use of surplus electricity and sustainably enhances economic viability. This project combines energy generation, storage, and modern technologies.

1. General Description of the Energy Park

In collaboration with Timeless Planet, terahash.energy has implemented a large solar ground-mounted system at the Kläger Group’s site in Hartha (Saxony), featuring 1.6 MWp capacity and battery storage housed in a container. The combination of photovoltaics, industrial battery storage, and Bitcoin mining impressively demonstrates how energy generation, storage, and modern technologies can be interconnected to improve efficiency and economic feasibility.

2. PV SYSTEM

The approximately 2,500 modules, each measuring 2.40 by 1.30 meters, deliver a total output of 1.6 megawatt-peak (MWp) and will be oriented east and west. This ensures that the energy generated in the early morning and evening can be utilized for longer periods. Since the system could not be installed on the company’s roof for various reasons, it was constructed on an area of more than 10,000 square meters next to the Kläger SPC facility. In the future, this system will permanently cover around 60% of Kläger SPC’s energy requirements.

3. Energy Management with Battery Storage & Integration of Bitcoin Mining

The surplus electricity generated during sunny weather that is not immediately needed for production often presents a challenge – especially on weekends and public holidays when energy consumption is low and high costs arise. To utilize this surplus efficiently and monetize it economically, the Kläger Group has implemented an innovative solution.

An installed mining container serves as buyer of last resort for excess electricity. This container can accommodate 120 air-cooled devices, efficiently converting surplus energy into digital value through Bitcoin mining. This method proves to be more lucrative compared to traditional feed-in tariffs. The mining container can absorb up to 500 kW of excess power from the company’s photovoltaic system.

Thanks to a fully automated software solution, the container is seamlessly integrated into the process chain. If the plant or the mining container cannot fully utilize the generated surplus energy, it is temporarily stored in a 350-kWh battery storage system. Only when this capacity is exhausted is the remaining energy fed into the public grid. In the future, battery storage capacities will be further expanded.

This combination of battery storage and Bitcoin mining maximizes the efficiency of in-house energy production while reducing dependence on less profitable feed-in tariffs – a forward-thinking approach to modern energy management.
